Thursday’s Polish Class goes to the movies

We saw Loving Vincent and it was amazing ! The Polish connection for all of us was truly overwhelming . So many talented Polish artists contributing to the production of this film.

Bylo jak zawsze bardzo milo spotkac sie w kinie na ciekawym filmie. Szkoda, ze nie mogla byc z nami reszta grupy: pani Malgosia W. pan Glenn , pan Erik i Nikita H. Moze nastepnym razem przybedziemy wszyscy. Do zobaczenia w przyszly czwartek.Podrawiam.Krystyna Swirska.

The world’s first fully oil-painted animated feature film, Loving Vincent brings the art of Vincent van Gogh to life to recount the life story of this most mysterious, mythical and tragic of great painters. Shot first as a live-action film, acted by a sterling cast and then painted over frame by frame with oils, Loving Vincent is simply an extraordinary cinematic achievement. This unexpected murder mystery follows in the aftermath of van Gogh’s death in July 1890. Armand Roulin , the son of an Arles postman, is instructed by his father to deliver a newly discovered letter to Vincent’s brother, Theo, who had supported the painter emotionally and financially. Making his journey from Paris and then to Auvers-sur-Oise, the northern French town where Vincent died, Armand encounters various people (many subjects from famous van Gogh paintings) who provide contradictory anecdotes about the painter’s death, suggesting it may not have been a suicide after all. The artist’s intoxicating colours and thick, vibrant brushstrokes come to life in jaw-dropping detail, making this a film best seen on the big screen. The film took more than six years to complete, with about 125 artists diligently hand-painting over 65,000 frames. With the van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands, the ultimate authority on the artist, officially endorsing the film, this will be the most visually stunning and magical film you will see this year.

w nowym roku 2018

…Witam bardzo serdecznie… juz w nowym 2018 roku!!! Kurs nadal trwa i wszyscy mamy sie dobrze. Jak wczesniej wspominalam, odwolano kilka jezykowych kursow ( w tym nasz), ale nie poddalismy sie i jak wczesniej bywalo spotykamy sie na zajeciach w kazdy czwartek o 18:00, w nowym budynku. Mamy bardzo ladna, funkcjonalna sale, ktora absolutnie …gabarytowo..dostosowana jest do naszych potrzeb. Jest jak zawsze wesolo i powaznie. Mamy dwie nowe uczennice, jedna..Olivia , chodzi do kalsy osmej i o dziwo..swietnie sie czuje wsrod doroslych. Poza nia jest inna … uczennica….siedemnastoletnia Nikita, ktora zdecydowala, ze musi sie nauczyc jezyka polskiego, gdyz nie rozumie, o czym rozmawia jej tatus z babcia. Obie studentki, to wnuczki moich kolezanek .. .sprzed…lat.  I tak szkola sie kreci. Poki daje ona nam radosc, satysfakcje i to, ze nadal czujemy sie potrzebni…to niech tak zostanie.  Na nasz kurs wrocila nasza kochana pani Ela i przyjezdza ze swym mezem, az z Lindsay. Co czwartek pokonuja wiele kilometrow, aby byc z nami i cieszyc sie wspolnie z nauki jezyka polskiego. Wczesniej, wiele, wiele razy wspominalam, ze uczac innych, ucze sie wciaz i wciaz. Dlatego tez ten kurs ma takie powodzenie, gdyz dla kazdego jest tu miejsce bez wzgledu na zaawansowanie znajomosci jezyka. Dziekuje wszystkim, ktorzy maja zawsze checi na spedzenie z nami  dodatkowego czasu, naszej Ani, panu Steven i innym. Dobrze sie czujemy w nowych warunkach. Obok naszej sali jest kuchnia, w ktorej przygotowujemy dla nas wszystkich… herbatke i zawsze jest cos slodkiego do schrupania.  A za sciana miesci sie bank polski, Credit Union, w ktorym pracuja mile panie, ktore sa ..jak potrzeba..zawsze pomocne. Program kursu sama opracowuje i staram sie przygotowywc  temat, ktory jest w danym czasie na “topie”, czyli..jesli panuje grypa wsrod nas.. to temat dotyczy przeziebien, chorob itd. Uczymy sie nowych slow i staramy sie “budowac” nowe zdania wlaczajac nowe slowa, ktore poznajemy na lekcjach. Sa oczywiscie piosenki, zagadki, no i jak co roku … nowa poezja, czyli ..wiersz, ktory wspolnie tlumaczymy na jezyk angielski, pozniej jest podzial na role i..podczas graduacji..wystep wszystkich przed goscmi. Jest podroz po mapie Polski..bez paszportu, poznajemy kierunki na mapie. Piszemy dyktanda, czesto tak z rozpedu, bez przygotowania, ale naprawde jest dobrze, skoro zna sie polski alfabet. Jest czytanie, sa rozmowy i ..poprostu, tak zwyczajnie..SUPER!!! ….. wspomne tylko, ze bylo…juz tradycyjnie robienie “polskich kanapek” no i …Boze Narodzenie, czyli wigilia po polsku.  Krystyna Swirska.

Hello everyone —and Happy New Year 2018! Our Polish course continues and we are all well. As I mentioned earlier, the board cancelled several courses, ours among them, but we did not give up and, like before, we meet every Thursday at 6:00 pm, but now at a different site. Our room is very nice, clean, functional, and perfect for our needs. As always, it is pleasant, the classes are fun but also serious. We have two new students: Olivia, who is in eighth grade and is very comfortable among all the adults. There’s also seventeen year-old Nikita, who decided she must learn Polish so that she can understand when her dad and grandma speak. Both students are great-grandchildren of friends from many years back. And so the school year continues. As long as it gives us joy and satisfaction, let it continue. We have a returning student, pani Ela, who now attends with her husband. They come all the way from Lindsay, driving quite a long way to be with us. I mentioned many times before that, as I teach, I also learn. And I think people enjoy the course in part because there’s something to learn regardless of how advanced your Polish. I also thank Ania and Mr. Steven. Next to our room there is a little kitchen, where we make tea and snack on some dainties. And on the other side, there’s the Polish Credit Union, where the staff there are very helpful. As for our program, I prepare it according to anything currently happening. So, for example, now that we are in flu season, our topic is about getting a cold or the flu. We learn new words and attempt to put them together into sentences. Of course there are songs, puzzles, and, as every year, poems, which we translate to English. We learn the poems and perform them at the end of the year. We study a map of Poland and write, read, and talk. It’s really great! I’ll also mention that we had a traditional open-faced sandwich making and, as always, the Polish “Wigilia” at Christmas.

It is mid-October 2017. Another school year has passed. We had an end of school year celebration in May. I mentioned earlier that we had a change of the school building. Maybe it was less comfortable, but we managed. I recall with fondness working with Ms Andrea and the secretary, who helped us every Wednesday. We celebrated the end of the school year in the classroom. We had several guests, including alumni of the class, and we wished each other a happy summer. In July, my husband and I flew to Poland for 2 months.We had fantastic summer holidays. We visited old friends scattered in various cities and towns, and did a lot of sightseeing and museum-going. After many years, we visited Krakow, where we were hosted by our nephew’s family. We visited museums by the Sukiennice as well as Dziedzictwo Narodowe, where we spent many hours. We walked the streets of Kazimierz, the old Jewish neighborhood.  We took a boat on the Dunajec river, where we were treated to breathtaking views. We also visited Wroclaw, which was in a heat wave, not unlike the kind to which we are accustomed in Southern Ontario. Air conditioned museums and shopping centers helped, but the heat did not deter us from more sightseeing. After many days, we returned to Kolobrzeg, our home base where we attended an annual Film Festival, which was followed by a Jazz Festival, headlined by Michal Urbaniak, who is possibly the best Jazz Musician in Poland today. He had a fantastic set that might have been 5 hours. Trumpet and saxophone. And that’s how time passed in Kolobrzeg. Before leaving for Poland, I submitted an application for this year, hoping that we will be granted another school year. I first learned that the course would start on the 4th of October, so I encouraged students to register. A week before class I received notice that all language classes, including Polish, had been cancelled. After 37 years, the polish course ceased to exist. My students and I did not give up. We could not imagine not continuing on with our classes. I first reached out to the Pastor at our Polish Parish if we could use the space next to the church. He immediately agreed. And this is how we continue our adventure with the polish language. Though we change location, we remain committed to speaking, writing, and thinking in Polish. First photos to follow. …jest polowa pazdziernika 2017 roku. Minal kolejny rok szkolny…zakonczenie roku mielismy  jak zawsze….w maju . Wspominalam wczesniej, ze zmieniono nam szkole, moze bylo mniej wygod, ale jakos przetrwalismy do konca roku.  Bardzo milo wspominamy wspolprace z pania Andrea i sekretarka, ktore byly pomocne w kazda srode…pozostaly wspomnienia….Mielismy jak zawsze uroczyste zakonczenie roku szkolnego, tez w naszej klasie. Byli goscie, dawni uczniowie naszej szkoly i… pozegnalismy sie na czas wakacji.  Zaraz na poczatku lipca –oboje z mezem wyjechalismy do Polski na prawie dwa miesiace. Byly to ciekawe i niesamowite wakacje. Odwiedziny   przyjaciol w roznym miastach, a przy okazji duzo zwiedzania.. zwlaszcza muzeow. Po wielu latach zawitalismy do Krakowa, goszczeni przez dalsza rodzine, mielismy mozliwosc zwiedzic duzo nowych miejsc, ktore powstawaly przez lata. Muzea przy Sukiennicach, kolejne…Dziedzictwo Narodowe  w innym miejscu Krakowa. Tutaj poswiecilismy kilka godzin, ale i tak bylo to niemozliwe, aby zobaczyc wszystko dokladnie. Byl slynny Kazimierz z pieknymi , uroczymi restauracyjkami i zydowska muzyka. Splyw Dunajcem na tratwie, z ktorej to podziwialismy przepiekne widoki. Z kolei  Wroclaw (podobnie jak Krakow) z bardzo wysoka temperatura i kanadyjska wilgotnoscia byl  rowniez dla nas przyjazny. Uciekalismy  czasami do ogromych galerii (Domow Handlowych), w ktorych to ,byla klimatyzacja i czas na..odpoczynek. Ale  my….przyzwyczajeni do upalow, nie zrazilismy sie i mimo tego chodzilismy  zwiedzac  miasto. Po wielu dniach powrocilismy do Kolobrzegu, gdzie wczesniej jak co roku,” zaliczylismy” kolejny Festiwali Filmowy. Pozniej byl Festiwal Jazzowy i podziwianie naszego ..chyba najlepszego jazzmana pana Michala Urbaniaka, ktory  przyjechal prosto z Woodstok, aby przez ponad piec godzin raczyc  nas swietna gra na trabce i saksofonie. I tak uplywal nam czas relaksu w pieknym  Kolobrzegu. Jeszcze przed wylotem do Polski, zarejestrowalam sie, czyli wypelnilam aplikacje na pozycje nauczyciela na ten szkolny rok, wierzac, ze po raz kolejny bedzie mi dane spotykac sie w szkole z uczniami. Najpierw otrzymalam wiadomosc, ze kurs obedzie sie 4 pazdziernika, dlatego tez namawialam uczniow, piszac, czy dzwoniac,  aby sie rejestrowali. Tydzien przed terminem otrzymalam bardzo krotka, zdawkowa inforamcje, ze wszystkie jezykowe kursy sa odwolane, a tym samym polski. Po 37 latach,  istnienia kursu jezyka polskiego ,bez  wiekszych wyjasnien ( byla wzmainka, ze za malo studentow), wszystko nagle sie zakonczylo. Uczniowie z mojej klasy nie poddali sie…i nie wyobrazalismy sobie, ze tak z nienacka ptzestaniemy sie spotykac, skoncza sie nasze lekcje, rozmowy, zagadki, dociekanie deklinacji, zrozumienie jej..itd. itd. pierwsza osoba, do ktorej sie zwrocilam z zapytaniem o miejsce… byl nasz proboszcz, ktory bez najmniejszego wahania zgodzil sie udostepnic nam sale w budynku obok kosciola. I tak kontynujemy nasza “przygode z jezykiem polskim”, ktora nigdy sie nie skonczyla. Owszem…zmieniamy lokale, ale moze i dobrze, gdyz swiadczy to , ze wszedzie dobrze sie czujemy, mowiac, piszac, myslac po polsku. Pierwsze zajecia beda juz wkrotce…26 pazdziernika, tez od 18:00 do 20:00 tym razem. Troszke krocej, nie znaczy mniej intensywnie. Dokladny adres podam ponizej. Zapraszamy! Zaznaczam tylko, ze jak na razie nasz kurs jest bezplatny i bez dodatkowego kredytu, ale to nam absolutnie w niczym nie przeszkadza. Do zobaczenia wkrotce….Krystyna Swirska..
